The "Fiaccole" of Abbadia
The "Fiaccole" of Abbadia
Fire rituals on Mount Amia
The charm of the “Fiaccole” of Abbadia San Salvatore: ancient fire rituals on Mount Amiata
The bond between humanity and fire is rooted in pagan customs shared by almost every culture worldwide. A symbol of life and the energy that moves the world, fire is the ultimate transformative element. It is no surprise, then, that the most significant moments of the year were historically celebrated by lighting great ritual bonfires.
From Celtic traditions to the winter solstice
In ancient times, the Celts marked their calendar by lighting fires on May 1st and on New Year’s Day. In pre-Christian Germanic regions, between December 19th and 23rd, Yule—the winter solstice festival—was celebrated. During those shortest days of the year, flames served to restore vigor to the sun, encouraging the return of light after the darkness.
Abbadia San Salvatore: the city of torches
In Tuscany, in the heart of the Sienese countryside, there is a place where this millennial rite is more alive than ever. We are talking about Abbadia San Salvatore, a gem nestled at the foot of Mount Amiata, an ancient volcano that was born from fire itself.
Here, Christmas Eve is not like any other evening: it is the night when the village lights up with the “Fiaccole” (or “fiaccule”, in the local badengo dialect). These are not mere torches, but monumental pyramid-shaped wooden stacks that can reach up to 7 meters in height.
The art of construction: a secret passed down through generations
Preparing the Fiaccole of Abbadia is a meticulous process that begins as early as autumn with the selection of logs. In the first days of December, the wood is layered using secret construction techniques, jealously guarded and passed down from father to son.
The climax of the event takes place on the night of December 24th:
-
The Blessing: The ritual begins in front of the Town Hall with the Blessing of the Fire.
-
The Lighting: The “mother torch,” the most majestic of all, is lit.
-
The Cascade effect: From this first spark, the torch-bearers carry the fire throughout the village, lighting the other stacks in a crescendo of light and heat.
An authentic Christmas amidst mulled wine and folk songs
Waiting for Christmas among the alleys of Abbadia San Salvatore is a magical experience. The winter chill vanishes before the power of the flames illuminating the night. It is the perfect moment to rediscover the value of simple things: walking while listening to Christmas carols, sipping mulled wine, and chatting with the locals.
The inhabitants of Mount Amiata are proud guardians of this millennial tradition, a rare example of authenticity that withstands the passage of time and invites every visitor to look at the world, for one night, through the eyes of nature.
