In a twist of fate, the palace was eventually purchased by the Medici themselves in 1549 and over time became their official residence.

Throughout the centuries, the palace was expanded and embellished, trasforming into a magnificent royal residence that later welcomed other dynasties, including the Hasburg-Lorraine and the Savoy family, kings of Italy.
