Lucignano: city of love

Lucignano

City of love

A visit to the enchanting village of Lucignano, with its distinctive elliptical shape, may hold  some surprise.

The symbol of the city is a masterpiece: the Golden Tree or Tree of Love, which Vittorio Sgarbi, the Italian art critic and politician, had his eye on for the 2015 Expo. The lucky charm of lovers, the tree is in fact a very original reliquary made of silver and gold gilt copper, with enamel, coral and rock crystal decoration.

Made by craftsmen from Arezzo and Siena over some 121 years, it stands majestically in the centre of the Municipal Museum’s public gallery.

The small museum, which houses works by Sienese artists and Luca Signorelli, will be the climax of our tour, but our journey inside the town walls will also wind through the cobbled streets past the Cassero, the Collegiata and the church of Saint Francis.

Then, after a quick rest break, we will leave the historic centre behind and learn more about a popular tale of great devotion.
